EDRi and EuroISPA attack EC's demands for notice and takedown

EDRi and the European ISP Association (EuroISPA) have prepared a joint civil society/industry position on the European Commission's draft informal recommendation for the takedown of websites which have been accused of being illegal.

The recommendation's scope is nominally restricted to child abuse websites, terrorism and racism.

Iceland's Parliament has recently accepted a proposal by Icelandic Modern Media Initiative (IMMI) asking the Icelandic Government to find "ways to strengthen freedoms of expression and information freedom in Iceland, (and provide) strong protections for sources and whistleblowers."

The proposal from IMMI came after secret dealings by a few banks in Iceland in 2009 leading to enormous debts and the lack of regulation and control, almost bankrupted the entire country.

EC negotiation mandate for EU-US personal data protection agreement

On 26 May 2010, the European Commission (EC) announced having drafted a mandate for the negotiation of a data protection agreement with the US in view of ensuring a high level of protection of personal information, such as passenger data or financial information transferred within the transatlantic police and judicial co-operation in criminal matters.

The European Parliament (EP) passed on 6 May 2010, with a large majority, a resolution adopting the report on a new Digital Agenda for Europe: 2015.eu by MEP Pilar del Castillo Vera.

List of actions for the implementation of Stockholm Programme

The European Commission published on 20 April 2010 its plan of actions for the implementation of the Stockholm Programme, the framework for EU actions on citizenship, justice, security, asylum and immigration policies for the period 2010-2014, which includes 170 initiatives.

In order to implement this complex programme, the Commission has identified a series of key action with clear timetables that should be taken during the 2010-2014 period, which include 10 concrete actions in the justice, fundamental rights and citizenship area.

Two concrete actions are proposed by the plan for personal data protection. First

During his speech on 27 April 2010 at the European Privacy and Data Protection Commissioners' Conference in Prague, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) Peter Hustinx asked the European Commission to continue its efforts in updating the present legal framework for data protection.
