On 16 March 2011, Sophie In't Veld's Privacy Platform met in the European Parliament to discuss the state of play for the review of the data protection directive.
The cross-party meeting was co-chaired by EU Parliament members from the EPP, S&D, ALDE, the Greens and GUE.

Building on the analysis produced for the European Commission's initial data protection consultation in 2009, European Digital Rights has submitted its second round of comments on the review of the 1995 Data Protection Directive.
One of EDRi's primary concerns with regard to the existing legal framework is the lack of predictability - due to vast differences in the way basic parts of the Directive are understood by Member States' authorities and courts as well as the powers and resources of national data protection authorities.

The European Commission (EC) recently published its "Internal Security Strategy" - a wide-ranging security programme covering international crime networks, radicalisation, cybersecurity, border management and crisis/disaster management.
One almost amusing element is how it included "piracy" (meaning unauthorised downloads) as a security issue. The logic is very reminiscent of the 1980s British comedy "Yes Prime Minister" where a senior civil servant explains to a colleague how to argue to stop power being put in the hands of citizens. The European Commission has published a Communication on "a comprehensive approach to personal data protection in the European Union", as the final stage in the consultation process leading to a review of the 1995 Data Protection Directive.
Based on its work on this dossier to date, the Commission has identified the need to address several key priorities, the first of these being to adapt to the impact of new technologies.

In a Committee meeting last week and in the Parliament's plenary session this week, Commissioner Malmström has set out her vision on various upcoming issues in her portfolio.
In the Committee, Malmström drew attention to the Communications on information sharing instruments and legislative instruments on terrorism and said that the analysis contained therein can be used for the development of future policy.
On the exchange of airline passenger name records, she said that a new Communication would be proposed in the plenary session of the Parliament.

During the Conference organised on 16 September 2010 by the Lisbon Council Brussels on "Unleashing the digital single market", Vivane Reding, vice-president of the European Commission and Commissioner for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship, announced, among other things, she would make a proposal for the future revision of the present Data Protection Directive.
In her speech, Mrs. Reding reinforced her beliefs expressed in October 2009 that Europe needed a Digital Single Market that would be beneficial for consumers and businesses alike and vowed to use EU justice policy to strengthen it.
