EP: Draft reports on IPR enforcement published

The European Parliament (EP) is working on a position in regards with the European Commission's Green Paper on enhancing the enforcement of intellectual property rights on the internal market.

Three EP committees are involved in this process: the Legal Affairs Committee (MEP Mareille Gallo, EPP, France) in charge of this report, "Opinions" provided by the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (MEP Paul Rübig, EPP, Austria) and the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (MEP Zusana Roithova, EPP, Czech Republic).

Commissioner Kroes on net neutrality

On 14 January 2010, Neelie Kroes, the former Competition commissioner, had her interview in front of the Internal Market and Industries committees of the European Parliament (EP) as designated for the position of digital agenda commissioner.

Answering to the various questions of the committee, Kroes addressed a serious of issues covering freedoms in the networked society, amendment 138 of the Telecom package, interoperability standards and net neutrality.

Kroes supported net neutrality and said this would be a central issue on her agenda.

AEDH (European Association for the Defence of Human rights) and EDRi (European Digital Rights) is launching the first edition of the European Civil Society Data Protection Award (ECSDPA). The prize aims at rewarding positive initiatives contributing to the visibility and effectiveness of the right to privacy and to the protection of personal data in Europe.

The Swedish Presidency of the EU has produced a study entitled "A Green Knowledge Society" that was made public in September 2009. The study aims to set the scene for the "tipping point in the transition to the knowledge economy" and to help prepare policy making for the "enormous consequences" that this will have for society and interaction between governments and citizens. On Saturday, 12 September 2009, civil liberties activists in many countries again took it to the streets under the motto "Freedom not Fear - Stop the Surveillance Mania". It was the second time these activities took place after the first international action day on 11 October 2008.

The biggest event was held in Berlin, where more than 25 000 people marched through the streets and applauded the speeches and the bands. Frank Bsirske, chairman of the world's largest trade union ver.di, called for a comprehensive law for employee and workplace privacy protection.
