On 11 January 2012, EDRi member FoeBuD staged an event on a shopping street in Bielefeld, Germany, to raise awareness about RFID tags ("spy chips") in clothing.

FoeBuD played an important role in putting this issue on the political agenda in 2003, when major German retailer Metro AG conducted RFID field trials in a model supermarket, dubbed "Future Store".

On 25 November 2011 the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Institute for Management Information Systems of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) held an expert symposium on RFID Privacy Impact Assessments in Berlin and presented their BSI Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) Guidelines.

The PIA guidelines are based on the RFID PIA Framework, a kind of co-regulation instrument that was signed by Vice President of the European Commission Neelie Kroes and industry representatives earlier this year.

In the context of the Hungarian Presidency of the European Council, the European Commission and the Hungarian Innovation Office jointly organised the IoT 2011 conference on the Internet of Things, earlier this week.

One of the main sessions was devoted to privacy and data protection in the IoT age.

The Privacy Impact Assessment Framework for RFID applications (RFID PIA) was officially signed by European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes, representatives of the RFID industry, the chairman of the Article 29 Working Party, Jacob Kohnstamm, and the Executive Director of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA), Udo Helmbrecht.

On 13 July 2010, the Article 29 Working Party adopted an opinion on the Industry Proposal for a Privacy and Data Protection Impact Assessment Framework for RFID Applications (Industry RFID PIA framework) in which it concludes it would not endorse the proposed document in its current form.

In a resolution on the Internet of Things, adopted on 15 June 2010, the European Parliament (EP) welcomes the communication of the Commission on the topic and in principle endorses the broad outlines of the action plan to promote the Internet of Things.

The Parliament however takes the view that the development of new applications and the actual functioning and business potential of the Internet of Things will be intrinsically linked to the trust European consumers have in the system, and points out that trust exists when doubts about potential threats to privacy and health are clarified.

Following the RFID recommendation issued by the European Commission on 12.05.2009, an informal working group on the implementation on the recommendation was set up, especially focusing on the task of creating a RFID Privacy Impact Assessment Framework. Members of the group were mainly industry representatives, some representatives of European standardisation organisations and a very limited number of civil society representatives - EDRi amongst them.
