On 4 July, the European Parliament has rejected ACTA with an overwhelming majority (478 against, 39 in favour, 165 abstentions).

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a plurilateral agreement which proposes international standards for enforcement of intellectual property rights. The Agreement, negotiated by a handful of countries1 in coordination with certain parts of industry, is controversial in both process and substance. If ratified, it will have major implications for freedom of expression, access to culture and privacy, it will harm international trade and stifle innovation.

The European Parliament now has to take responsibility and vote “no” on ACTA in the upcoming “consent” procedure. The ratification process of ACTA is also starting on a national level in the various Member States.

European Digital Rights has published a booklet aimed at informing EU officials and parliamentarians about the many complex issues surrounding the issue of Internet blocking.

This is part of EDRi's ongoing work in order to persuade the EU institutions not to introduce web blocking as part of the upcoming Directive on Child Exploitation.

Frequently Asked Questions on the

Terrorist Finance Tracking Program / "SWIFT” Agreement

European Digital Rights has prepared a "frequently asked questions" document to explain the changes between the SWIFT agreement previously rejected by the European Parliament and the current text under discussion.

The comic book "Under surveillance" is an information and awareness tool for young adults created in the European project "Sensitization and information of young European citizens on the protection of their personal data", where EDRi was one of the partners.

The project is coordinated by the French League of Human Rights (LDH), in partnership with the European Association for the Defense of Human Rights (AEDH), European Digital Rights (EDRi), the Czech association Iuridicum Remedium (IuRe) and the Spanish association Comunicació per a la Cooperació (Pangea).
