Several normative acts that have entered into force or are being prepared in Russia bring forth an increased state surveillance over the Internet and a blacklist of blocked websites and internet addresses.

Slovak Constitutional Court receives data retention complaint

The group of Slovak MPs filed the complaint against the data retention before the Slovak Constitutional Court on 9 October 2012.

They requested the Constitutional Court to rule on the local implementation of the data retention and scrutinize its conformity with the Slovak Constitution.

The plans of the UK government of increasing the police online surveillance powers under the draft Communications Data Bill (CDB), also known as the “Snoopers’ Chart”, might come into contradiction with the European Commission’s position on citizens’ rights.

If approved, CDB will place innocent citizens under continuous surveillance having all their communications and online activity monitored, all of the time.

Six years ago, as a result of pressure from the UK, the European Union adopted the Data Retention Directive. The measure was intended to harmonise the EU single market for telecommunications, requiring all EU operators to retain data for the purposes of “investigation, detection and prosecution of serious crime,” including terrorism.

The Austrian Working Group on Data Retention counters the lack of responsiveness to citizens' political participation with even more participation.

Albeit gaining support of over 100 000 citizens, the Austrian citizens' petition against data retention has been deferred to the Parliament Justice Committee by the Petition Committee.
