Survey on Chip implants in Germany

According to a survey carried out by German IT industry lobby group BITKOM, 23% out of 1000 German respondents would accept to have a microchip implanted in their body if that would bring concrete benefits from it.

The survey was meant to show the increase of the division between real life and the virtual world, as one of the themes of the CeBIT technology fair having taken place in Hanover between 2 and 6 March 2010.

However, the study findings are debatable as the respondent sample was not only small but also taken from a special pool (CeBIT visitors who are probably IT inclined anyway).

Article 29: Reduce the storing period of Google Street View's images

Alex Turk, the head of EU Article 29 Working Party (WP) sent a letter on 11 February 2010 asking Google company to warn people about the arrival of its Street View vehicles and to reduce the retention period of unblurred material from one year to six months.

Google has met a series of problems during the last period with its Street View system in Europe being under fire from several EU member states such as Germany, Finland, France as well as non-member states such as Switzerland.

The German data protection authorities want to have a meeting on the EU-US data protection Safe Harbour agreement and to agree on a resolution on this matter.

Heise reports that some of the German Lander Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) that will meet in Düsseldorf in April are unhappy about the practical application of the Safe Harbour agreement, especially when a high number of servers from companies such as Google and Facebook is located there, including EU citizens personal data.

A Romanian local court has decided to award 10 000 Euro as moral damages to a private person, after his full details were published on the website of the City Hall, including his HIV-related problems.

In June 2008, Bucharest District 1 City Hall published on its website some decisions of the Local Council on the beneficiaries of free public transport by subway for persons with severe handicap.

New Google's service raises privacy concerns

The new networking service issued by Google company called Google Buzz has met criticism and confusion from its users who complained that a list of people they frequently email or chat with has appeared on their profile.

The problem occurred due to the default options when creating one's profile which automatically post the respective list from Gmail and Google chat. In order to avoid posting the respective list on the profile, the user has to use the opt-out variant or edit the list himself.

Bits of Freedom starts campaign for data breach notification law

The Dutch digital rights organisation Bits of Freedom started a campaign for the introduction of a data breach notification law in The Netherlands.

A data breach notification obligation on telecom providers is already to be implemented on the basis of the ePrivacy Directive, but Bits of Freedom insisted that this obligation should be extended also to other corporations and organisations. It drafted an extensive position paper, including a concrete proposal for amending the Dutch Data Protection Act.

UK introduced full-body screening in Heathrow airport

As announced in January 2010, UK has begun developing a programme of introducing full-body scanners in airports, starting with Terminal 4 of Heathrow airport and Manchester airport.

BAA, the biggest UK airport operator, said its staff had been trained in behavioural profiling to spot out unusual attitudes in the passengers such as nervousness or agitation as going through the terminal.
