Google’s Street View privacy breach again in the public eye

Recently, the UK Data Protection Authority - Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has decided to reopen its investigation on Google over the collection of personal information by Google Street View project from May 2010.

As a reaction to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC)’s report issued earlier this year into the Street View data collection, ICO has now sent a written request to the search engine asking for more details regarding its knowledge of, and reaction to, the data collection.

UK websites might have to identify “trolls”

According to the new UK government proposals, website operators might soon have to identify users who have posted defamatory messages online, so that the victims of the respective messages may take legal action against the "trolls".

Presently in UK, a website operator is liable for everything that appears on its site and therefore it can be taken to court by anybody who claims something defamatory has been posted about him/her on the respective website.

Article 29 WP’s opinion on the cookie exemptions

Dear Mr Fjellner,

I am writing to you with regard to your recent blog post on ACTA.

First of all thank you for providing a clarification after you tabled an amendment for the International Trade Committee vote next week calling for ACTA to be ratified. We are heartened to read that you believe that it would be irresponsible to take a definitive position on ACTA in the absence of assurances from the Commission. You further explain that clarifications are needed on “one or two” paragraphs.

A new EC proposal on e-identities and e-signatures

On 4 June 2012, the European Commission published a new draft regulation on e-signatures and e-identities that is meant to extend the existing e-Signatures Directive to include new services such as e-stamping or e-seals that would guarantee the origin and the integrity of an electronic document.

“The proposed Regulation will ensure people and businesses can use their own national electronic identification schemes (e-IDs) to access public services in other EU countries where e-IDs are available.”

Modernisation of CoE Convention 108: EDRi's comments

EDRi submitted last week its comments on the proposal for the Modernisation of Council of Europe (CoE) Convention 108 for the Protection of Individuals with Regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data.

EDRi reiterated its support to the overall objectives of the Modernisation process, and expressed its satisfaction that most of its earlier comments have been taken into account in subsequent versions of the proposal.
