European Digital Rights has published a booklet aimed at informing EU officials and parliamentarians about the many complex issues surrounding the issue of Internet blocking. The booklet was distributed this week to the mailboxes of all Members of Civil Liberties, Culture and Women's Right's Committees of the European Parliament.

This is part of EDRi's ongoing work in order to persuade the EU institutions not to introduce web blocking as part of the upcoming Directive on Child Exploitation.

ENDitorial: Malmström seeks to distance from blocking as criticism grows

Over the last two weeks, Commissioner Malmström has made several determined efforts to distance herself from Internet blocking and related policies supported by her and her services.

In June of last year, DG Justice, Freedom and Security (which is now under Commissioner Malmström's responsibility) proposed Internet blocking as well as revoking of IP addresses and domain names.

New Belarus Internet regulations require compulsory web registration

Based on a decree issued on 1 February 2010 by President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, Belarus Council of Ministers adopted five resolutions introducing new Internet regulations which require a compulsory registration of all web sites and the collection of personal data of Internet cafe users.

According to one of the resolutions, the registration is required for all Internet resources on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, irrespective of their commercial or non-commercial nature.

Commissioner Malmström launches censorship arms race

Commissioner Malmström has been explaining to the European Parliament and to the press that her Internet blocking proposals are "only" about child abuse websites and "only" the kind of blocking that is in place in countries such as Sweden.

Finally, the Court of Milan made public the opinion that backed the indictment of a couple of Google's executives charged of Italian Data Protection Act infringement for not removing a violent video from the company's video sharing platform, video.google.com.

Asociación de Internautas goes to EC against court decision

Asociación de Internautas (the Spanish Association of Internet Users - AI) has recently denounced to the European Commission (EC) the Spanish Supreme Court decision in the case introduced by SGAE (the General Society of Authors and Editors) in March 2004.

In its ruling at the end of December 2009, the Supreme Court decided against AI and later on ordered the association to remove the website "putasgae.org" and pay SGAE damages for user generated content that insulted SGAE and other persons and entities.
