This year, the EDRi member Modern Poland Foundation is again asking people all over the world about their vision of the future of copyright. There are now 4 days to go before the end of the crowd founding campaign and there are 4 weeks left before the deadline to submit the work for the Future of Copyright Contest.

We all feel that it is something wrong with the copyright law and that it doesn't fit to global digital era.

Do you violate copyright law by using an Internet browser? This is, in short, the question that the UK Supreme Court is asking the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) in a preliminary ruling.

The debate on the private copying levy that is imposed in some EU Member States has been carried out for years and yet no solution has been found yet. The issue is also part of the wider discussion on copyright, its adaptation to the digital age and its legitimacy in the eyes of the citizen.

The private copying levy is a surcharge on the price of media and devices capable of making copies and is supposed to be redistributed to rights holders to compensate for the alleged harm suffered as a result of copies made under the private copy exception to copyright.

The money collected in some Member States is also partly used to finance socio-cultural projects.

The issue of the private copying levy that is imposed in some EU Member States has been discussed at EU level for years. So far, it has been impossible to find a solution. The debate is also part of the wider discussion on copyright and its adaptation to the digital age.

Last week, European Digital Rights attended the second annual Stockholm Internet Forum which focused on two main themes: Internet Freedom and Security and Internet Freedom and Development. A novelty this year were the Unconference sessions.

The European Commission this week started providing some insight into its plans for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) – in an event in the European Parliament organised by Dutch Liberal MEP, Marietje Schaake and in a “civil society” meeting in the Commission itself.

Both meetings started very promisingly.

The Finnish campaign "Common Sense in Copyright Law" organized a blackout day 23 April 2013 to market the citizens' initiative, which would strip the worst parts out of the Finnish copyright law and add German-style fairness-requirement to the copyright contracts. More than 50 websites participated to the event, which was also widely published in the Finnish media.

The initiative has to collect 50 000 signatures before 23 July to get submitted to the Finnish parliament.
